Considered one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution, the settlement of Derby was first mentioned in Roman times.

Its expansion as a manufacturing centre continued throughout the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The site of the first water mill for silk throwing in the UK, it also saw the invention of the Derby Rib Attachment, a machine that revolutionised how they were manufactured.

The building of an aircraft factory by Rolls Royce in 1907 marked the beginning of another industrial boom. Derby also became a rail manufacturing centre and a design and development centre in the 1930s.
